Where do you want me to start?

[ That's. A hell of a question, really. He still knows so little about Earth. Shiro never really spoke of it in much detail during his captivity--at least, not to Ulaz--and what little he's gleaned in his time here has been pretty scattered. And also not necessarily always reliable, thanks, Minako.

So, well, let's start with something basic. ]

Are humans the only sentient species on the planet?

[Fair enough question! Ichigo just didn't know where to start - Earth was a big place, after all.]

As far as I know, yeah.

[Because even hollows were just transformed human souls, so.]

Though scientists do speculate octopodes might gain sentience after a couple million more years.

[ Ichigo gets a million points for using the correct plural of octopus, even if it's a little confusing to Ulaz. (Tbf, "octopi" would be confusing, too. Non-standard plurals!!!) ]

What kind of animal is an octopode?

Octopus. Octopode's the plural.

It's an underwater creature - it's got 8 legs with suckers on them, and no skeleton, so it can squeeze into anything that can fit it's internal beak.

[He wheels himself over to where is notebook is, quickly drawing a crude octopus and handing it over to Ulaz to see.]

[ Is it supposed to look like a blob with noodles...? (Yes, Ulaz.) Though it doesn't really matter what it looks like, he supposes, he doesn't really expect to ever see one for real. (He hasn't gotten the chance to properly explore the fourth floor, so he doesn't know we have a fucking underwater tunnel up there yet.) ]

I see. An aquatic creature makes sense. I know Earth is mostly water even though humans are not especially adapted to such an environment.

Yeah, it is - mostly because life itself originally came from the sea, when a creature decided it'd had enough of swimming around and wanted to try walking.

Anyway, they're pretty smart - they're known for escaping their cages and recognizing their handlers. If they can get over the whole 'dying after successfully spawning' and needing water at all times thing, they could definitely become sentient.

You keep them as pets?

They're mostly kept in zoos and aquariums, though I guess some people keep them as pets.

[Weirdos. Weirdos keep them as pets.]

[ Ulaz nods. Sure, this all makes sense, but mostly he's ready to move on from octopodes. He has plenty of other things he'd like to know about Earth. ]

How do humans govern themselves? Do you have a king?

Some countries do - like england - but they're more of a figurehead. Most countries nowadays elect people to lead them.

Earth is not united under a single government?

[ That certainly does... explain... some things.... ]

Not even close. Not in my time, anyway.

I see. That is very atypical, especially among spacefaring peoples.

Really? I mean, I hope we're able to be unified by the time we're able to actually get into space, but...
