What you may call 'muggles' didn't look kindly upon wizards -- witch hunts were real, after all. It's true in recent times the state of muggle-wizards relationship has improved, but it'll be a long time before we're comfortable with revealing the existence of magic and everything it has.

It was less about fearing them and more about fearing their reaction -- at least that was how I thought many decades ago. I left aside my first love because I did not want to sacrifice my magical abilities to be with him, as that would have been the only way to live among muggles without revealing the existence of magic.
